Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy. It can help in a wide range of conditions – from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular shiatsu sessions help to prevent the build up of stress in our daily lives. Shiatsu can help combat many common bodily ailments such as back pain, headaches, migraines, whiplash, neck stiffness, join pain, menstrual problems, digestive problems, asthmatic symptoms, sports injuries, depression and stress.

Shiatsu is also a great alternative for people interested in the benefits of acupuncture but are needle shy.

Shiatsu at KORU Health Center is performed by Fawna on a massage table or on a futon on the floor with the receiver fully clothed in stretchy, comfortable clothing, including clean socks. No oils or lotions are used. Fawna integrates shiatsu into her massage technique.

Lomi’ili’ili

Lomi’ili’ili literally means “flat pebbles in motion” in Hawaiian and refers to a powerful and deeply relaxing treatment of warm oiled stones applies to muscles with broad pressure long strokes head to toe. It restores balance to the mind, body and spirit while relaxing and releasing tense areas, tonifying muscles and improving overall circulation of blood, lymph.

Pregnancy massage

During pregnancy, your muscles are constantly flexing to balance your ever-changing center of gravity. Massage can help your body adjust to your new state.  All the aches and pains that accompany the joy of pregnancy can be eased or alleviated with quality bodywork throughout your pregnancy.  Recommended for second and third trimester patients.

Benefits of pregnancy massage:

  • Ease stress on your ankles, lower back, hips, and joints that bear the pressure of the baby’s weight.
  • Ease stress to your neck and upper back, the muscles balancing new abdomen and breast size.
  • Increase relaxation and peace during a significant life transition.
  • Improve your “positive pregnancy posture,” preventing greater discomfort later in pregnancy.
  • Reduce any pregnancy-related headaches, sciatic pain, or carpal tunnel symptoms you might experience.
  • Reduce swelling (edema) in your arms and legs.

Postpartum Massage

In the postpartum period, nature sets about undoing in eight weeks what it took nine months to create. Though it may be difficult, it is as important to care for yourself now as it was during your pregnancy. Postpartum massage helps to restore your body to its pre-pregnancy condition.

In the postpartum period, you may suffer from fatigue and soreness from overused birthing muscles. The demands of a newborn can take its toll on your physical well-being by adding stress and tension to your life. A relaxing massage can help a nursing mother by reducing tension which may interfere with milk letdown. Postpartum “blues” may be softened by having someone nurture and comfort you for a change.

The postpartum massage session is just as different as the woman coming in. Receive restorative massages that will concentrate on the muscles most used during labor and delivery to ease you into motherhood, with the rest and rejuvenation your body needs.

When should you receive your first postpartum massage?  It will depend on how your delivery went, how your current health is, and when your doctor advises. For some, it is within the first week, for others it takes a few months. Please check with your Maternity Health Care Provider if you plan to receive massage within the first six weeks of the postpartum period.

Benefits of postpartum massage:

  • Nurture and provide emotional support.
  • Facilitate restoration of pre-pregnancy physiology.
  • Alleviate muscle strain/fatigue of labor and birth.
  • Promote pelvic floor healing and comfort.
  • Re-balance pelvic and spinal structural realignment.
  • Restore and normalize abdominal structures.
  • Facilitate healing from cesarean birth.
  • Restore normal walking patterns.
  • Prevent and reduce back and neck pain caused by newborn care.
